Visual and Performing Arts Help

Fine Arts Goals

Our desire is to develop young men and women with a passion for worshipping the Lord through the arts. Our mission is to develop students spiritually, academically, and artistically.

Spiritually
Our goal is to be Christ-centered in all we do, teach, and say. We want to love God and love others through worship and the arts.

Academically
Our students will experience classes in the arts of the highest caliber and rigor to prepare and equip them for the next level of their education.

Artistically
Our students will experience the arts from a uniquely Christian perspective that challenges them to be the best theatre participant, artist, vocalist, or instrumentalist they can be for God.

Junior High Options

Art

Junior high art is the final step in Calvary’s Art curriculum, culminating in a project-based and review-saturated understanding of Western art. Up until this point, students have learned about the elements and principles of design, human proportions, different media, art in the church, global art, design, modernity, and accurate life drawing. Because we’ve gone through these subjects together over the span of elementary school, we do brief reviews in junior high at the beginning of each quarter. The rest of our time is dedicated to working our way through the Western art history timeline, with large projects rooted in artistic movements, and small drawings and studies in our sketchbooks. Our large projects include a still-life photography project based on Baroque lighting, a dramatic landscape painting based on romanticism, and a charcoal figure study based on realism.

Our goal at the end of the Calvary art experience is to leave students with a well-rounded understanding of the art world. Although we finish with a focus on Western art, students examine art from a diverse range of artists and cultures, learning to think critically, respectfully, and theologically about the art they may come in contact with in the future.
